The Power of Bananas

With the creation of the north American United Fruit Company in 1899, the worst days of labor exploitation in modern times began. Farmers were driven away from their land to be substituted by slaves, with no rights to speak of and wages so low they hardly survived. The plantation owners were in possession of the docks, the railroads as well as the power plants. Even police and politics were in the hands of the company.

Today, the United Fruit Company is known as Chiquita and is one of the largest and most powerful cooperate groups, fully in control over the global cultivation and economic trade of bananas.
