The Welcoming Banana

From the 1890ies to the Golden Twenties, people who emigrated into the USA were given a banana at their arrival on Ellis Island as a Welcome Gift. Alas, many of them had never seen such a fruit before and had no idea how to eat it. It happened more than often that bananas were eaten as a whole- that is, with their peel. One might call this the beginning of the Fast Food generation, but we’re not going to spread rumors.
